The Ability of Human Voice

Human is endowed with the ability to distinguish other's human voice. With that ability, the sound of the child, mother's voice, the voice of the husband, the voice of a friend can be identified and distinguished. When no sound of people talking instead of in front of her, man is able to guess whose voice it.

But what if all of life, one can never distinguish the voices, including voices of his family everyday in the hearing.

Cases that experienced by women entrepreneurs from England who from childhood was not able to identify voices. Women's initials KH 62-year-old was not deaf. He could hear the sound but in his mind all the votes are equal so it can not recognize the characteristics of each person's voice.

The inability to recognize that voice in the medical world is known as phonagnosia. The case was first investigated by scientists at University College London (UCL) which has been published in the journal Neuropsychologia 2008.

As quoted from the site UCL.ac.uk, Sunday (09/05/2010), Dr Duchaine and Lucia Garrido Brad from the UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience found the case experienced by KH capable and understands what diomongkan people but failed to identify the voice of people .

KH is also able to enjoy the music but never knew who was singing. KH never even children could recognize the voice, until he had to deal with the child if it is talking is his daughter.

The most frightening thing to him was when he received the phone. To the extent he should be a special schedule membat anyone who will call at certain hours.

Brain scans conducted on KH revealed that the right hemisphere temporal regions known as the voice turned out to work less active, while the left part of normal brain activity.

These findings suggest that in the human brain, the right side is more important in voice recognition while the left is used to understand the words.

Phonagnosia known so far due to an interruption in the right hemisphere of the brain lesion after a stroke or brain damage. But, in the case of KH, a scan showed no evidence of brain damage in regions associated with perception of sound or hearing and found normal hearing ability.

According to Professor Pascal Belin, cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Glasgow, identified the voice are important things for someone, especially when telephoned.

"We can guess who the person was on the phone but the person with phonagnosia not able to do this," he said as quoted from the telegraph.

The human brain is also able to recognize the voice of the people based on characteristics such as hoarseness, harsh, shrill, musical or otherwise.
